History of the SaunaSaunas was first invented in Finland in Ancient Europe. The Fins used the sauna in their ancient religious ceremonies for mental, spiritual, and physical cleansing. When they migrated between 5,000 and 3,000 BC from an area northwest of Tibet to Finland they brought the sauna with them. Native American Indians used sweat lodges for cleansing and purifying, recognizing the health benefits of a sweat as well. Romans also used saunas in their time. Sauna use has been long accepted as method to help with health related problems such as high blood pressure, fatigue, stress and many others. When the sun's rays passes through stone, clay, or sand it creates long wave infra-rays. These long wave infra-rays are absorbed in the body and creates heat which results in healing. The first types of sauna's used heated stones, sand, or steam baths. To meet the modern day needs heated stones, etc was replaced with electrical stoves. However, where the heated stones transferred the true infra-red heat, the electrically heated stones only transferred 20 % of their energy into infrared. In 1965 Dr.
Tadashi Ishikawa, a member of the Research and
Development Department of Fuji Medical, received a
patent for a zirconia ceramic infrared heaters used
in the first healing infrared thermal systems. These
heaters transfers approximately 90% of their energy
into far infrared heat waves which has proven to be
extremely efficient both in healing and power
consumption.
